Clinched

CLEVELAND, Ohio (News Talk 1480 WHBC) – The Cleveland Guardians are headed to the postseason after a 3-2 win over the Rangers on Saturday night. The Guards scored the game winning run after batter CJ Kayfus was hit by a pitch, Rangers reliever Robert Garcia hit Kayfus with the bases loaded allowing Petey Halpin to score. The Guardians then celebrated in front of a sell out crowd at Progressive field, Kayfus was mobbed by his teammates.

The Guards are one win away from clinching the AL Central division title, as they play the Rangers tomorrow to close out the regular season. The Guardians were 0-4 against the Rangers this year before tonight, Cleveland remains in first place of the AL Central thanks to holding the tiebreak advantage over Detroit.

The Guardians benefited from David Fry’s injury replacement Johnathan Rodriguez tonight. Rodriguez, who was called up after Fry’s injury, hit a 2-run bomb tonight to get the Guards scoring started in the bottom of the 1st inning. Kayfus recorded just the second hit by pitch of his young MLB career tonight, his first one came on August 14th in a win over Miami. Since falling to 40-48 before the all-star break, where the Guards were in the midst of a 10 game losing streak, they are 47-26.
