Guardians Eclipse Tigers 7-3 To Advance To ALCS
(10-12-24)
The Guardians first home game of the year started with a total solar eclipse and a victory.
Saturday’s home game was won thanks to a moonshot by a player who was not on that roster.
Lane Thomas, acquired at the trading deadline, hit a legendary grand slam off of presumptive American League Cy Young award winner Tarik Skubal in the bottom of the 5th inning to propel the Guardians to a 7-3 victory over the Tigers in Game 5 of the ALDS.
Thomas’s 2nd homer of the series just cleared the 19 foot left field wall and sent the fans at Progressive Field into a frenzy.
With the victory, Cleveland moves on to the best-of-7 American League Championship Series where they will play the Yankees Monday night in New York.
The Guards had tied the game 1-1 when Jose Ramirez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 5th. Then on the very next pitch, “Legendary Lane” drove a Skubal fastball into Guardians history for a 5-1 lead.
Thomas added an infield single in the bottom of the 7th inning to finish the day 2 for 4 with 5 RBI’s, bringing his ALDS total to 9 runs batted in.
Steven Kwan added 3 more hits and scored 2 runs for the Guards. Kwan finished with 11 hits in the series.
From starter Matthew Boyd to closer Emmanuel Clase, manager Stephen Vogt used 8 pitchers to get the game 5 clinching victory.
Tim Herrin got the win in relief, while Emmanuel Clase picked up a 2 inning save, the 1st of his career.
Skubal took the loss for Detroit.

Game 1 of the ALCS from “The Bronx” is Monday night, first pitch comes your way at 7:38PM.
It will be the Guardians first trip to the American League Championship Series since 2016.
You’ll hear that game on News-Talk 1480 WHBC.
