(official Perry High School release)
Perry Wrestling Coach Brent McBurney Announces Retirement
PERRY TOWNSHIP, April 3, 2025 — Perry High School announced today that Brent McBurney has retired as head coach of the Perry wrestling program. After 20 years of dedicated service as both an assistant coach and the head coach, McBurney’s decision to step down comes at a time when the program is on solid footing, and he leaves behind a legacy of growth, success, and community impact.
During McBurney’s tenure, the Perry wrestling team saw significant achievements both on and off the mat. Under his leadership, the team has consistently competed at the highest level, with 12 Federal League Championships, 5 OHSAA DI Team State Runner-Up titles and numerous individual state champions and state placers. His teams compiled a remarkable 133-33 record in dual meets while competing against some of the best high school wrestling teams from across the country. He was named the 2024 OHSWCA State Coach of the year and was named Federal League Coach of the Year multiple times. McBurney’s commitment to the development of his athletes, focusing on both their athletic skills and personal growth, has been a hallmark of his coaching style.
“It has been my honor and privilege to lead and be part of the Perry Wrestling program for the last 20 years,” McBurney said. “At this time I will be stepping down as the head wrestling coach and looking forward to being able to watch my son compete in college and my daughter finish out soccer in high school. I appreciate the support of the administration and community over the years.”
“Perry High School is grateful to Coach McBurney for his years of service and dedication to our students and the community,” said athletic director Kevin Yoder. “During his time at Perry our wrestling program was not only one of the best wrestling programs in the state, but also in the country. Coach McBurney was a class act at all times and great to work with. He along with his coaching staff and wrestlers represented our school and community in the best possible way at all times, and his impact on the wrestling program and the student-athletes he coached will not be forgotten. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”
The school district is committed to finding a new head coach who will continue to foster a competitive, disciplined, and supportive environment for Perry wrestling. Updates on the search for McBurney’s successor will be made available in the coming weeks.
